Characterisation of contaminant transfer

Research question
Evaluation and characterisation of the agro-chemical transfer from land to aquatic ecosystems, including wetlands.

Approach
Our approach consists in field- and lab-based experimental studies and integrates hydrological, analytical, mineralogical, isotope and microbial methods and techniques to better understand the reactive transfer of contaminant in complex and dynamic environmental systems.

Main results
The reactive transport of pesticides and copper is characterised in wetland systems in relation with the biogeochemical conditions. Present studies focus on the transfer of chloroacetamide herbicides and copper.
Figures : Illustration of the integration of various scales for studying the transfer of organic and inorganic contaminants in wetland systems. The transfer of pesticide and copper mixtures in runoff from agricultural catchment is characterised in stormwater wetlands (picture on the left). The reactive transport of contaminant is thoroughly characterised in lab-scale wetland systems (central picture) in relation with their biogeochemical development. Microbial processes associated with the transformation of contaminants are studies using biomolecular tools (DNA extraction, PCR-T-RFLP, genotyping, etc.) and compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA).

Perspectives
Detailed characterisation of copper and chloroacetamide herbicides transfer in wetlands and aquatic ecosystems.
