X-ray diffraction

Analytical X-ray diffraction unit is able to analyze mineral phases contained in different kinds of solid natural samples, such as rocks, soils and sediments…

These samples can be prepared in two different ways :

- whole rock : samples are crushed and placed in a sample holder. The surface is flattened in a way to avoid preferential orientations.

- clay fractions : clays are collected by extraction with centrifugation after physical and chemical processes. This fraction is put onto a glass blade in a way to orient clay minerals on their principal reflexion (00l plans) for better identification. Analysis is first done without any treatment, then after ethylene glycol and hydrazine saturation and heating.

The relative proportions of the crystalline phases are determined by semi-quantitative analysis using different software, both for whole rock and clay fraction.
